Solo exhibition at Port Jackson Press

Artist’s Statement

I’m drawn to subjects I know and the lines that characterise their form, whether a figure or facade.
I have travelled many times to Paris, spent 6 weeks moving through Italy and have lived in Collingwood for 15 years.
The etching process enhances the energy in the line for me. Knowing every mark is going to be etched in the plate impacts the translation from sight to execution.
My process for drawing on a plate is quick and fluid.
I can’t bring myself to draw slowly, the loss of energy in the line creates an uninteresting facade and a dull and lifeless character. The cautious approach becomes obvious in the facades and the figures lose their confidence.
I can relate to Richard Corliss’ statement, “Every artist undresses his subject, whether human or still life. It is his business to find essences in surfaces, and what more attractive and challenging surface than the skin around a soul?”
This is my interpretation and my connection to the souls of these female figures and facades.
My partner, Theo etches and editions all my prints with the exception of the Gertrude Streetscape which was etched and printed by Andrew Gunnell website. I am incredibly grateful to both of them.
